If you're considering therapy for the first time, have questions about how we will work together, or just want to check out the office before you commit, a 15 minute consultation is offered at no charge.
Our belief is that the fit between client and therapist is the most important aspect of your counselling, so we want you to have a chance to try things on for size before you make your first appointment. This consultation is not therapy, but an opportunity for you to get a sense of who your therapist is and how they work. The consultation can happen over the phone or in-person and you won't be under any obligation to continue if Voth Family Therapy doesn't feel like the right place for you.
For most people, the first time in a therapist's office brings feelings of nervousness and apprehension. This is perfectly normal and expected -- you are meeting a new person for the first time, one with whom you are hoping to share some of your most private experiences. During the initial session, there are a few things that you can expect. First, we will take time to review and complete a few forms. You won't need to bring any special documentation or information to fill them out, and this usually takes 10-15 minutes. Then we will spend some time exploring what has brought you to therapy. This is also your opportunity to ask any questions you may have. During this time we may ask a few questions to guide you or to clarify information. Your therapist will primarily be curious about your reasons for coming to therapy, what you have tried (successfully and unsuccessfully) in the past, and what your hopes and goals might be for our work. At the end of the hour you will be asked to give some feedback on how you felt about the session and whether or not you would like to schedule another appointment. Your therapist will give you some feedback as well, and comment on the potential areas she can help you work with.
